  Srila Prabhupada said:

"Srila Vyasadeva revealed these statements after perfect realization and therefore they are perfect, for liberated sages like Vyasadeva never commit errors in their rhetorical arrangements. Unless one accepts this fact, there is no use in trying to obtain help from the revealed scriptures."  -- CC Adi-Lila Chapter 2 text 86 purport.

"If you concoct, 'I am more intelligent than my Guru,' 'I can make additions and alterations,' then you are finished." -- Srila Prabhupada lecture July 12, 1975 Philadelphia Pa.

"We cannot water down the philosophy to make it more palatable. Our books must remain as they are." -- Srila Prabhupada letter to Lilavati devi dasi March 31, 1977.

  Notable Quotes:

Jasomatinandan prabhu:  " ... commonsense dictates that except for typographical mistakes such as "planet of the trees," no editions and subtractions should be done from 1972 edition."

Things seemed to running in such a way that it was possible for editors to make changes to Srila Prabhupada's books, and then to have those changed books published, without informing Srila Prabhupada.

Hayagriva earned a Master Degree in English at New York University, and became Srila Prabhupada's senior editor from the very beginning of ISKCON in 1966 and into the early 1970s: he was in fact Prabhupada's right hand man for book editing for quite a few years.

"The books of Srila Prabhupada, in their originally published form, are sufficient in themselves for the attainment of the spiritual perfection of pure devotional service."

"We must remember that the book changes did not appear as an isolated event in an otherwise progressive continuation of the wonderful movement to save humankind. It was quite the opposite. To many it was abominably regressive. And it is absolutely necessary to understand the changes of the books in that context ..."

"The overriding fact is that Srila Prabhupada never told Jayadvaita Maharaja or anyone else to edit his books after he left. I repeat, Srila Prabhupada never gave Jayadvaita Maharaja or anybody authority to edit or change his books after his departure. Instead, he said, “Print the books the original way.” By late 1976, he was acutely aware of the ‘American disease’ of compulsively changing things, so he chose the safest route to protect his books: “NO CHANGES.”

"Over the years since Srila Prabhupada departed, many groups of devotee's outside of ISKCON were denied access to Srila Prabhupada's original books by the BBT. So the BBT, once set up for distributing Srila Prabhupada's books profusely to everyone and anyone, were banning certain groups from receiving Srila Prabhupada's books for reading and distribution. That was Jayadvaita's example to us of how to act "in a spirit of loving cooperation."

Srila Prabhupada's Solution: The MacMillan Precedent

"Because one can no longer get written permission from the author to change anything, is it possible to make corrections without showing disrespect to His Divine Grace? I believe the solution may be found in the original contract signed with the MacMillan Company, publishers of the 1972 complete edition of the Bhagavad-gita As It Is. . . . Srila Prabhupada wanted the following words added to the section shown below: "only with the consent of the author")."
